Constitutional and Political History of Yugoslavia: from Formation to Dissolution
The course gives an introduction to the constitutional, legal and political history of Yugoslavia beginning with its formation as the unitary authoritarian Kingdom, through its renovation as the multi-ethnic communist federation, up to its dissolution and formation of the new nation-states. The course will examine the concepts of integration of multi-ethnic society and why they failed. The course will be focused on organization of power and political system but it will also look at relevant ideologies, types of ownership and control of economy, rights of citizens, and respective international environment, with particular attention being payed to the process of dissolution. The principal aim of the course is to give the student basis for deeper understanding of political and institutional reality that emerged with a break-down of Yugoslavia as well as to help in better understanding of the nation-building tendencies elsewhere in Europe and the World.
