The aim of this course is to enable students to recognize and interpret linguistic practices (oral traditions and expressions) and literary works in terms of intangible cultural heritage. For this purpose, the course provides basic insight into some linguistic branches and approaches (sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, ethnolinguistics, contact linguistics) relevant for understanding the relation between language and culture and language and thought.

Language will be analyzed as a vehicle of the intangible cultural heritage (knowledge, practices, customs, believes, values). Cross cultural interaction will be illustrated by phenomena of language contacts and literary contacts in diachronic and synchronic perspectives. Selected examples of cultural heritage institutions, manifestations and tourism products inspired by language and literature (ex. writer’s house museum, literary routes,…) will be analyzed, compared, and evaluated.

The course includes lectures and seminars. It may also include guest lectures.
