Soils and paleosols

Currently, I am involved in project financed by Croatian Science Foundation entitled Nanominerals in sediments and soils: formation, properties and the role in biogeochemical processes. The project aims to investigate the presence, formation, unique properties and the role of the naturally occurring inorganic nanomineral fraction in biogeochemical processes, particularly in the cycling of trace elements, in different modern marine and lacustrine sediments and soils developed on the carbonate rocks of the Adriatic region.

The subject of my PhD thesis was origin, conditions and diagenetical changes of Cretaceous paleosols formed during regional emersion of isolated Adriatic carbonate platform.

Soils and paleosols are subject of my interest since the beginning of my scientific career. My investigation of soils and paleosols was financed by Ministry of Science, Education and Sport (projects No.: 195-005; 0195-034 and 195-1953068-2704) and covered different topics, from environmental point of view (distribution and speciation of potentially toxic metals) to pedological aspect, as well as geotechnical viewpoint (excessive flysh erosion in Vinodol valley). Additionally, I was collaborator in bilateral Austrian-Croatian Project “Comparison between Terroirs of Istria, Vienna and Wachau”, investigating soils of Istrian Malvasia vineyards developed on terra rossa and flysch.

Impact of mining on the environment and human health

My interest for the impact of mining on the environment has already begun during work on my diploma thesis. Later, to a lesser extent I discussed impact of mining in my master thesis. Recently, I intensified my work on this subject through the IGCP Project No. 594, "Impact of Mining on the Environment in Africa". I investigated the speciation of potentially toxic metals in soils developed over historic silver mine St. Jakob on Medvednica mountain, as well as in overbank sediments of Gradna river in Samoborsko Gorje which drain old copper mine. In the frame of IGCP Project 594, I investigated impact of mining, mine processing and smelting in the Otavi Mountainland (mines: Tsumeb, Kombat, Berg Aukas) in northern Namibia on agricultural soils (determination of potentially toxic metals speciation and bioavailability in soil) and children’s health (bioaccessibility of potentially toxic metals from ingested soil in human body).

Geoarchaelogy with emphasis on archaeometry of ceramics

In collaboration with archaeologists, I am engaged in geoarchaeology and archaeometry of ceramics.

We investigated the geological context of the archaeological site of Pleistocene-Holocene age in Vela Spila on Korčula island and the origin of the deposited material.

I investigated the provenance of raw material and technology of ceramics from different archaeological sites and different archaeological ages (eg. antique Gnathia ceramics on Vis island; graphitic Late Iron Age pottery from Slavonia; Bronze Age ceramics from Slavonija, Podravina and Turopolje and ceramics of Vučedol culture from Eastern Slavonia) by archaeometrical methods (mainly optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction). I conducted prospection and investigation of potential raw material for the production of local pottery on island of Vis, Papuk mountain, areas of Podravina, Turopolje, Vinkovci and Stari Mikanovci.

Currently, I am interested in the development of direct ceramic dating method by rehydroxilation.

Sampling media in environmental and exploration geochemistry

I dealt with geochemical, mineralogical and statistical studies on the impact of geological (lithological) substrate, ore paragnesis and anthropogenic activities on the spatial distribution of chemical elements in stream and overbank sediments of small drainage basins during the making of my master's thesis. The case study was Žumberačko-Samoborsko gorje. I collaborated with scientists from Croatian Geological Survey who worked on project "Geochemical Map of Croatia". The research results were used in defining the advantages and disadvantages of stream and flood sediments as sampling media in environmental geochemisty, as well as in exploration geochemistry.

Unsaturated zone

I was collaborator in project entitled: Groundwater and Dependent Ecosystems: New Scientific and Technological Basis for Assessing Climate Change and Land-use Impacts on Groundwater (GENESIS), funded under the thematic area Environment (including Climate Change) of the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Community for research, technological development and demonstration activities (2007-2013). The objective of GENESIS was to integrate pre-existing and new scientific knowledge into new methods, concepts and tools for the revision of the Ground Water Directive and better management of groundwater resources. I was part of the Croatian team which was focused on Zagreb aquifer. My main interest was shallow unsaturated zone of this unconfined aquifer, its mineral and chemical properties, water flow and solute transport, as well as different processes which govern solute transport.

Other interests

Working with scientists from Croatia and abroad I have dealt with other topics such as palaeoecological reconstruction of clay deposits Ričica near Karlovac; mineralogical studies of loess palaeosol profile at Šarengrad; testing of bentonite for use in landfills; alternative ways of treating hazardous waste from petroleum, the assessment of climate change using water, soil and honey as sampling media; etc.

Tla i paleotla

Trenutno sudjelujem na projektu Hrvatske zaklade za znanost pod nazivom: Nanominerali u sedimentima i tlima: formiranje, svojstva i uloga u biogeokemijskim procesima. Predmet istraživanja navedenog projekta je prisustvo, formiranje, specifična svojstava i uloga prirodnih anorganskih čestica nanominerala u biogeokemijskih procesima, osobito u kruženju elemenata u tragovima, u različitim marinskim i jezerskim sedimentima i tlima razvijenim na karbonatnim stijenama istočnog dijela Jadrana.

Tlima i paleotlima Istre bavim se kontinuirano od početka svoje znanstvene aktivnosti kroz MZOŠ projekte br.: 195-005; 0195-034 i 195-1953068-2704, kao i kroz bilateralni austrijsko-hrvatski projekt Comparison between Terroirs of Istria, Vienna and Wachau. U sklopu tih projekata izradila sam i disertaciju o krednim paleotlima. Istraživala sam i distribuciju teških metala u tlima na kršu, distribuciju željeza i mangana u terra rossi koja ukazuje na uvjete nastanka tih tala, ekološke aspekte tala na Velom Brijunu, paleotla formirana za vrijeme regionalnih emerzija; brzine trošenja u tlima različitih kronosekvenci razvijenih na flišu. Osim u Istri, istraživala sam i sastava eocenskog fliša u području Slanog potoka u Vinodolskoj nizini s ciljem utvrđivanja prirodnog uzroka ekscesivne erozije, kao i njegovom podrijetlu.

Utjecaj rudarenja na okoliš i zdravlje ljudi

Geokemijskim istraživanjima utjecaja rudarenja na okoliš kojima sam se bavila na samom početku znanstvene aktivnosti pri izradi diplomskog rada, djelomično sam nastavila kroz magistarski rad, te u zadnje vrijeme intenzivnije kroz IGCP projekt broj 594 “Impact of Mining on the Environment in Africa”. U diplomskom radu bavila sam se specijacijom potencijalno toksičnih metala u tlima razvijenim na području povijesnog rudnika Sv. Jakob na Medvednici, u sklopu magistarskog rada utjecajem povijesnog rudnika Rude na okoliš, a u sklopu IGCP projekta 594  utjecajem jalovišta i talionica velikih rudnika bakra (Tsumeb, Kombat, Berg Aukas) u području Otavi planina u sjevernoj Namibiji na poljoprivredna tla, kao i biodostupnošću i biopristupačnošću potencijalno toksičnih metala iz tala i jalovinskog mulja u ljudskom organizmu.

 

 

Geoarheologija s naglaskom na arheometriju keramike

U suradnji s arheolozima bavim se geoarheologijom i arheometrijom keramike.

Istraživala sam geološki kontekst arheološkog nalazišta pleistocensko-holocenske starosti u Veloj spili na Korčuli kao i podrijetlo istaloženog materijala.

Arheometrijskim metodama (optička mikroskopija; rendgenska difrakcija) istražujem podrijetlo materijala i tehnologiju izrade keramike s različitih arheoloških lokaliteta i različite starosti (npr. antička Gnathia keramika na Visu; grafitirana keramika mlađeg željeznog doba s područja Slavonije; brončanodobna keramika Podravine i Turopolja i keramiku Vučedolske kulture s područja istočne Slavonije). Potencijalne sirovine za proizvodnju lokalne keramike istraživala sam na Visu, Papuku, u Podravini, Turopolju i u okolici Vinkovaca i Starih Mikanovaca.

Trenutno me zanima i razvijanje direktne metode datiranja keramike rehidroksilacijom.

Mediji uzorkovanja u geokemijskoj prospekciji i okolišnoj geokemiji

Geokemijsko-mineraloško-statističkim istraživanjima utjecaja geološke (litološke) podloge, rudnih paragneza i antropogenih aktivnosti na ponašanje i prostornu raspodjelu kemijskih elemenata u vodotočnim i naplavnim sedimentima u malim drenažnim bazenima bavila sam se tijekom izrade svog magistarskog rada na području Žumberačko-samoborskog gorja. U tim istraživanjima surađivala je sa znanstvenicima Hrvatskog geološkog instituta koji su radili na projektu MZOŠ „Geokemijska karta RH“. Rezultati istraživanja poslužili su u definiranju pogodnosti vodotočnih i naplavnih sedimenata kao medija uzorkovanja u okolišnim geokemijskim istraživanjima, kao i u geokemijskoj prospekciji.

Nesaturirana zona

U razdoblju 2009.-2014. sudjelovala sam u FP7 projektu: Groundwater and Dependent Ecosystems: New Scientific and Technological Basis for Assessing Climate Change and Land-use Impacts on Groundwater (GENESIS). Cilj projekta GENESIS bio je integracija postojećeg i novog znanja u nove metode, koncepte i alate za reviziju europske direktive o vodama i za bolje upravljanje vodnim resursima. Bila sam dio hrvatskog tima koji je bio fokusiran na zagrebački vodonosnik. Moj glavni interes bila je plitka nesaturirana zona otvorenog vodonosnika, njene mineraloške, geokemijske, sedimentološke i pedološke značajke, kao i tok vode, transport onečišćivala te različiti procesi koji uvjetuju taj transport.

Drugi interesi

Surađujući s različitm znanstvenicima u zemlji i inozemstvu sporadično sam se bavila i drugim temama kao što su: procjena klimatskih promjena i strategija prilagodbe na području Namibije upotrebom vode, tla i meda kao medija uzorkovanja; paleoekološka rekonstrukcija ležišta gline Ričica kod Karlovca na temelju mineralogije glina, geokemije i palinologije; mineraloška istraživanja lesnih paleotala u profilu kod Šarengrada; testiranjem bentonita za primjenu u odlagalištima otpada; alternativnim načinima tretiranja opasnog otpada iz naftnog rudarstva.
